Music has held an illustrious position in the course of human history: not only as art but also as a means of healing. Only recently has there been a growing interest from the research community in trying to understand how music affects patients and physicians. In recent years, human and animal studies have examined the psychological and physiological effects of music. However, a fundamental question underlying the role of music in health is also to ask why music developed in the first place and why it produces an emotional reaction and attenuation of the human stress response in the listener despite that it does not respond to any essential biological need.

Music can provide a space for healing Music can provide relaxation, feelings, and thoughts. After the terrorist attacks in Paris, including a concert in the Bataclan concert hall of this city, we were forced to play music in a meditative tone, songs that give space and time for reflection. The piece that Bob Boilen played all weekend was written by Hiya Wal Âalam, a band made up of musicians from Tunisia, Palestine, and Sweden. It is music that mixes culture and is perfectly thoughtful. Robin Hilton’s selection of a piece by pianist Goldmund gave him some room for comfort when the news came this weekend.

He remembers his special live music moment with uplifting Malian singer Oumou Sangaré, and Robin shares his life-affirming experience at Sufjan Stevens’ show. Music therapy is an emerging field. People who become qualified music therapists are usually musicians who are proficient in music. They have a deep understanding of how music elicits emotional responses to relax or stimulate people or help them recover. They combine this knowledge with their familiarity with various music styles to find a specific type that can help you through challenging physical rehabilitation courses or guide you in meditation. They can find the type of music you like, whether it’s electronic pop music or large-scale opera.

Holly Chartrand, a music therapist at the Massachusetts General Hospital affiliated with Harvard University, was first trained as a singer. When she realized that she could use music to support others, she decided to become a music therapist, as if it had supported her all her life. She said: “My favorite part of my job is to see how much song affects people who are uncomfortable.”

The music therapist has almost no boundaries. They may play music for you or with you and even teach you how to play an instrument. On a particular day, Chartrand might push the drum, ukulele, or iPad and speakers into the patient’s room. She said: “Technology allows us to access all kinds of tracks, and I can find and play almost any track I like.”
